The Challenge

86% Imports

In 2021, Hawaii spent over $3 Billion importing 86% of its food. Researchers found that an island must grow at least 50% of it's staple crops.

25% Food Insecurity

For children specifically, Hawaii had the second highest-food insecurity rate in the nation in 2021, at about 25%.

15% Poverty

According to Aloha United Way, poverty continues to rise in Hawaii since 2018. Poverty is one of the world’s largest contributors to depression and anxiety.

Speak the Language.

  • Sustainable Agriculture

Is farming in such a way to protect the environment, aid and expand natural resources and to make the best use of nonrenewable resources.

  • Food Sovereignty

Is a food system in which the people who produce, distribute, and consume food also control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution. This stands in contrast to the present corporate food regime, in which corporations and market institutions control the global food system. Food sovereignty emphasizes local food economies, sustainable food availability, and centers culturally appropriate foods and practices.

  • Food Equity

Is the expansive concept that all people have the ability and opportunity to grow and to consume healthful, affordable, and culturally significant foods.

"If we are what we eat and we eat what we grow, we'll grow who we are."
